When we set out to create a business our footprint and our impact were on the forefront of our minds. Knowing that businesses are the largest causes of emissions, we wanted to build Axe & Hammer in a way that mitigates the general impact of consumerism, not just our business's. Below are the two ways in which we aim to do this:
We've partnered exclusively with Bay Photo Lab, an industry leader in photography print manufacturing based out of Santa Cruz, California. The reason we work with Bay Photo specifically is that they've embraced an environmentally-forward mindset in their production.
Bay Photo received the Green Business Certification Award from the Monterey Bay Green Business Program for their sustainable production efforts. Among others, this award was granted to Bay Photo for their efforts in water use reduction, their use of environmentally sound cleaning products and their internal recycling program.
The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is a nonpartisan, United States–based nonprofit environmental advocacy group that partners with corporations to fight global climate change. The EDF has over two million members and has been recognized consistently as one of the world's most impactful environmental advocacy groups.
As a small business specializing in art, we don't have a ton of leverage when it comes to protecting the environment, but the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) does.
As part of our commitment to our planet, we're giving 5% of our annual profits to the EDF. Our hope is that our growing contribution can help offset some of the environmental impacts caused.
We know we have a long way to go to an ideal company. Our goal is that by building Axe & Hammer on a foundation of moral decision making and environmental contribution we can grow in the right direction. Maybe one day we'll be able to stand alongside Patagonia in the fight for our planet, but for now we're doing as much as we can.
"Our intention creates our reality." - Wayne Dyer
We're constantly trying to improve our business, whether it's our print production, website quality or sustainability efforts. If you have suggestions regarding anything we do, please let us know. We'll happily reward meaningful feedback with print discounts and shoutouts.
